Halloween to Thanksgiving: A Decor Swap System That Doesn't Take Over Your Garage

Halloween comes down the first week of November, and Thanksgiving goes up a few days later—often on the same tired Saturday. Without a system, the swap turns into a garage avalanche: skeletons stuffed into whatever tub is closest, pumpkins rolling loose on a shelf, and December decor buried under all of it. A simple decor swap system will not make a big decorating job small, but it does make every swap faster and calmer once it is set up. As a NAPO Certified Professional Organizer and professional garage organizer in Houston, MJ builds the storage side for clients—but the routine is something any household can run.

If you cleared the floor during your fall garage reset last month, you already have the space. Now give holiday decor a home that stays put—and keep your hurricane supplies reachable until the season ends November 30.

Labeled holiday decor bins on garage shelving with Halloween and Thanksgiving decor being swapped

One Holiday, One Set of Bins

Every holiday gets its own matching, labeled bins: Halloween, Thanksgiving / Fall, Christmas – Indoor, Christmas – Outdoor. Do not mix. When everything for one holiday lives together, the swap is simply "this set down, that set up." Clear bins with a label on the short end let you see contents even when the bins are stacked.

Set a Decor Limit

Decide how many bins each holiday gets—and stick to it. If Halloween is two bins, a new inflatable means something old goes. A limit keeps decor from slowly taking over the garage, and it makes post-holiday shopping sales much easier to resist.

Store by the Calendar

The next holiday sits at the front at reachable height; the one you just finished goes to the back or up high. In October, Thanksgiving bins are front and center. In late November, Christmas moves forward and Halloween goes to the top shelf until next fall. You never have to unload the whole wall to reach what you need.

Edit While It Comes Down

Taking decor down is the best moment to decide what stays. Broken pieces, items you skipped this year, and anything that no longer fits your home go in a donate bag right then—not back in the bin. Next year's setup gets faster because there is less to sort.

How Long Does the Swap Take?

It depends on how much you decorate and how your home is laid out. A front porch and a mantel can come down in as little as 10 minutes. A whole-house Halloween is a different job: MJ has spent 12 hours setting up one client's Halloween decor and about 4 hours taking it down. Whatever your size, the order is the same: pack Halloween straight into its own bins as it comes down, pull the Thanksgiving bins and set up, then return the Halloween bins to the back shelf. Kids can help with the packing if each bin has a picture label.

When to Bring in Help

Call if holiday decor has spread into every corner of the garage, if bins are mixed beyond recognition, or if you want a system in place before Christmas decor comes out. An organizer can edit, re-bin, and label your whole holiday collection in one session.
